Find book reviews
To locate recent book reviews (books published within the past 10 years or so), try searching in:
- Books in Print With Book Reviews or
- NoveList (fiction only)
or in a general article database such as:
- EBSCOhost (choose Academic Search Premier and Masterfile Premiere as the databases to search)
- Ethnic Newswatch
- LexisNexis Academic (Choose the "News" tab,and then select "Book, Movie, Music, Play and Video Reviews" from the drop-down box as the news category to search). You may need to change the "Specify Date" drop-down box from the "Previous 3 months" default to a different date.
For best results, try typing in the author's last name combined with part of the book title. For example, to find book reviews on Toni Morrisons's 1994 book "The Bluest Eye," type in your search as "Morrison and Bluest Eye." You also might want to limit the dates you search to years close to when the book was published, since most book reviews are written shortly after publication.
You might also want to try one or more of the web-based book review sources listed at AcqWeb's Directory of Book Reviews on the Web [http://www.acqweb.org/bookrev.html].
A good online source of substantial reviews, not just a brief blurb, is Reviewsof Books.com. This site has links to reviews in newspapers and other major online media sites that you don't have to pay for or register to read. The only requirement is that a book must have had at least 3 reviews since 2002.Older Book Reviews
To locate older book reviews:
- Book Review Index - covers 1965 to present (Ref Z 1035 A1 B6)
- Combined Retrospective Index to Book Reviews in Scholarly Journals - covers 1886 to 1974 (Ref Z 1035 A1 C6x)
- Combined Retrospective Index to Book Reviews in Humanities Journals - covers 1802 to 1974 (Ref: Z 1035 A1 C652x)
These indexes will give you the citations to book reviews published in various periodicals, usually in abbreviated form. You will probably need to consult the Abbreviations Key in the front of the volume to determine the full periodical name. Then, once you have the complete citation (journal or magazine name, date, issue/volume, page number, etc.) you can check to see if Joyner Library provides access to the publication. Check the Joyner Library Catalog and the E-Journal/E-Book Portal to see if the publication is available. If not, you can request the item through Interlibrary Services.
