Use the Classic Catalog

Use the catalog to find books, journals, government documents, videotapes, CDs, DVDs, and other materials in ECU Libraries.

To find a specific title:

  • Use the ‘Begins with (Browse)’ search type located under ECU Libraries in menu bar
  • Omit any initial articles from you search like ‘the’ or ‘an’
  • Click on the correct title from the results list
  • Use the call number to locate the item in the library

To find books by a specific author:

  • Use the ‘Begins with…’ search type and change the drop down menu to ‘author’
  • Click on the appropriate name to get a list of titles by that author
  • Click on the title you want from the results list
  • Use the call number to locate the item in the library

To find books on a topic:

  • Use the ‘Keyword’ search type
  • Enter important terms about your topic. Using more search terms will narrow your results list.
  • Use the call number to locate the item in the library.

To find reserve materials:

  • Click on the Reserves link
  • Use the Reserve by Instructor tab to lookup items by the professor’s name
  • Use the Reserve by Course Number tab to lookup items by your course abbreviation
    • Ex: ENGL 1200
  • Use the Reserve by Course Name to lookup items on reserve by your course name
    • Ex: Composition (WI)
  • Take the call number to the Circulation desk to borrow the materials.

More tips for using the new library catalog:

  • Use single quotes to search for a complete phrase.  For example:‘adventures of Tom Sawyer
  • Use the ? symbol as a substitute for a missing character in a search term, usually when you are unsure of a spelling or when you want to find two forms of one word. For example:
    • wom?n retrieves “woman” or “women”
    • theat?? retrieves “theatre” and “theater”
  • Use the $ symbol to truncate search terms.
    • cook$ retrieves “cook,” “cooks,” “cooking,” and “cookbook”

When searching for journals in the catalog, you might notice a location code (see example) that does not make sense to you.
