Welcome to the Joyner Library Virtual Website Tour for DE Students. (Education Edition)

This tour will walk you through some of the important services offered by the library, as well as lead you to important resources for the research process.

This "Guide on the Side" tutorial allows you to continue to use the Joyner Library website while also following along on the tour. 

The tour will take approximately 20 minutes.

Navigation

Before we begin, please take note of the following navigation buttons that you will see in the Guide on the Side panel:

Your Turn:  This button represents an opportunity to use the website on the tour, so follow the directions!

Back Home:  Click this to be taken back to the library homepage. You will see this when the next step requires you to be on the homepage.

Ask Us:  Click this to be connected with a TRC Librarian via IM when the TRC Service Desk is open.

 For definitions, click the definition a second time to close the definition.

My Account

My Account allows you to renew books online and view your holds and interlibrary loan requests. 

The link to My Account can be found by clicking "Services" or "About Us" (scroll down)."

Your Turn!  Click on "About Us", scroll down and click on the My Account link. You can log in using your Pirate ID and passphrase.

For now, you likely will not see much in your account, but it is a good start to be able to log in!

Please draw your attention to the box in the center of the homepage called One Search.

This search box and the tools linked below it are where you will conduct much of the online scholarly research while at ECU. The following pages will outline each of these powerful tools.

OneSearch

Use One Search to simplify your library search. It searches through a massive collection of books, scholarly journals, newspaper articles, e-books, dissertations, conference proceedings, and more, linking you to items available through ECU Libraries, whether online or in print.

One Search does not search every database the library subscribes to, but it is a great place to start. The next section will tell you about finding other databases for your particular subject area.

Find Databases

Your Turn!  Click on the link called "Browse all of our resources" below the "Explore our Electronic Resources" heading. Another way to get to the database list is to click the words "Database List" under the OneSearch box. 

You can find an article by searching in a database. A database is a searchable collection of information. Examples of everyday databases include Amazon.com and iTunes. A library database contains newspapers, magazines, scholarly journal articles, and trade journals.

The Database List shows all of our subscription library databases, broken down by subject area. This will be important for searching for education specific topics.

Your Turn!  Using the listing of databases by subject, look for a database that is listed as appropriate for educational research.

Other ways to search

Additionally, you may want to search by a specific format. The databases can also be searched by the format of the information you will find in them, such as streaming video or newspapers. To do this, look under Browse Databases by Category.

If you know the name of the database you are looking for, you can search alphabetically. Both of these options can be found on the right.

Find E-Journal/E-Book Titles

Click here to be taken back home to the Joyner Library homepage.

The next tool on the tour is the E-Journal/E-Book Portal. If you click on E-Journal/E-Book Portal under the One Search box, you will find a search page that allows you to search by individual titles of journals and e-books, as well as by subject. This is especially helpful if you are tasked to find an article from a specific journal, or if you are interested in browsing the most recent articles from a practitioner journal in the education field.

Test this by searching some popular education trade publications, such as Education Week or American Educator.

Hint: This is not the easiest way to search for a specific journal article if you have the citation. Go to the next page to learn more about that!

Citation Linker

You will find the Citation Linker by clicking on "Research" in the black bar at the top of the homepage. This is a tool that allows you to see if ECU Libraries have a specific article or resource by citation.

Your Turn!  Enter the following citation information into the Citation Linker. You can copy and paste from this screen.

Research Tip: You can limit your search to the TRC's collection by clicking on the "Collections" tab on the left side and on "TRC."

Research Tip: You can also find books when using One Search by clicking the check box on the left side that says "Items in the catalog."

Research Guides and Course Reserves

Click this button to go back to the Joyner Library homepage. Next, click on the "Research" tab and direct your attention to the heading Research Guides under "Research Help".

Research Guides are library tutorials created specifically for your major or your class. They are helpful when you are working on a project and you need help getting started.

Your Turn!  Click on the Research Guides and find the education research guides. Bookmark guides for future use in a class. You may also see this guide linked to your Blackboard course.

Search WorldCat

WorldCat is an online catalog that lists all of the books in almost every library on the planet. If you have not found what you are looking for in the vast amount of resources available to you through ECU Libraries, WorldCat would be a good next step to find information in print (book) resources.

On the next page, you will learn about how to get library materials we do not have access to at ECU Libraries...for free!

Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan

You can request articles, books, media, and more from other libraries when ECU libraries do not have what you need.

Your Turn!  Click on the "Services" tab in the black bar along the top of the webpage. Click on Interlibrary Loan.

Log in to Interlibrary Loan (ILL) with your Pirate ID and passphrase. When logged in, use the correct link on the left to request materials that the ECU libraries do not have. We will find them at another library, have them sent here, and check them out to you!
