Your Turn

Your Turn: This button represents an opportunity to use the website during the tutorial.

Let's get started!

What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan is the department that allows you to request materials that ECU Libraries does not own or have available, whether it is lost or checked out by another patron.

These materials can include books, articles, DVDs, CDs, music scores, government documents, and reports.

* We cannot get required textbooks

For Distance Education students, they also offer document delivery for materials that ECU Libraries does own.

How to Use ILLiad

ILLiad is the name of the system through which you will submit and track your requests.

Click forward for some notes on filling out your registration form.

Your Registration Form

* Please include all digits of your Banner ID number and your ECU email address.

* If you are a Distance Education student, choose Distance Education for your Delivery Location to have items shipped to you.

* If you would like someone else to be able to pick up materials on your behalf from the circulation desk, enter their names as an Authorized User.

Placing a Request

When you are logged in to ILLiad, select which request form is best for the material you need.

Use the other (Free Text) form when you have a citation but don't know what type of item it is.

Provide as much information as you have to facilitate the department's search for your resource.

Notes

Checking the Status of Your Request

An interlibrary loan request involves asking another library for items to be loaned or copied from their collections, so the speed of the process is affected by many variables.

The ILLiad system provides detailed tracking of your requests. To access this feature: once you log in, pending requests are immediately displayed on the main page.

Renewals

Due dates are dependent upon the lending libraries.  Oftentimes renewals are allowed, but if they are not, it will say that on the label on your ILL material.

If you need a resource for a particular amount of time, let ILL know when you request or pick up the material, so they can begin working with the lending institution to make that a possibility.

You can renew through ILLiad, or by email (jis@ecu.edu) or phone (252-328-6068).

To renew through ILLiad:

Log in and click on Renew Checked Out Items on the left side underneath My Account.  Click on the Transaction Number for the item, then click on the red Renew Item link.

If renewals are not allowed for the item, the link will not appear there.  The red renew link may also not show up if the system is requiring you to wait until closer to the due date to renew.

Returning ILL Materials

ILL materials may be returned at the music library or the circulation desk in Joyner or Laupus Library.

Please do not return them in the drop boxes.

Cancelled Requests

Your Interlibrary Loan request may be cancelled if the item:

  • is owned by ECU Libraries
  • has not been published yet
  • is not owned by any library
  • cannot be located in a library that allows lending
  • is deemed by the lending library to be too rare, old, or in too poor a condition to be scanned or shipped

To resubmit your request:

Log in to ILLiad and scroll down to Cancelled Requests, click on the transaction number, then click the red link to Resubmit Request.  This will bring up the form so you may update any information such as the Not Wanted After Date.

If you want to see why the request was cancelled within ILLiad, on the left side toolbar, click on Emails from ILLiad.

Using Interlibrary Loan within OneSearch

If you search for materials using the OneSearch box on the library homepage and you are not finding what you are looking for, it is easy to use Interlibrary Loan from where you are.

   Go to https://library.ecu.edu

In the OneSearch box, type in Hipster subculture to see how to request materials from your results list.  Click Search.

Check the "Add results beyond your library's collection" box on the left and the catalog will run the search again, but it will include items at other libraries.

The very last line of each material record will say the material type.  Search for one that says: Citation Online and click there.

On the next screen, click on Request through Interlibrary Loan.  If you are already logged in, it will automatically pull up a request form for that material.

Distance Education and ILL

Document Delivery

Document delivery provides materials that Joyner Library does own to Distance Education (DE) students who do not come to campus, who live and work remotely. It also provides materials to faculty, staff, and graduate students.

This service is not available for undergraduates who come to campus.

Are there limitations?

How do I send materials back to the library?

Log in to ILLiad.  If you have identified your status as Distance Education, you will automatically have a Joyner Library Materials Request Form section.  These forms are for requesting materials that Joyner Library owns.
