Cotten Cotten Hall
This photograph shows the parlors used as common rooms in the dorms for visiting and gathering. Most likely, this particular picture is of the parlor in Cotten Hall. Cotten Hall was built in 1925 and named for Sallie Southall Cotten, a leading Pitt County writer. Her husband was a member of the General Assembly and vigorously advocated Greenville as the location of East Carolina Teachers Training School at the turn of the century. Utilized as a girls’ dormitory, it also housed the office of the Dean of Women for years and is currently still used as a residence hall.

This photo was taken in 1939 during the construction of the Flanagan Building. The new building was U-shaped with a court opening to the south. Flanagan originally housed the Science, Home Economics, Commerce, and Geography Departments. Part of the East Carolina Historical District, Flanagan has been undergoing a multi-million dollar structural and technological renovation.

stadium College Stadium
Given the popularity of intercollegiate athletics and to attract GI Bill students after WWII, fundraising began for the construction of a stadium in 1948. College stadium, seating 2,000 fans, was completed in 1949. Located just north of where the Brewster Building now stands, the stadium was eventually demolished after the construction of the much larger Ficklen Stadium in 1962.
