Timeline for East Carolina Teacher's College: 1921-1951
1921: East Carolina Teacher's Training School renamed East Carolina Teacher’s College and enrollment reaches 1,000 students.
1922: Fleming Dormitory is built. ECTC awards its first bachelor degrees. East Carolina celebrates its 15th anniversary.
1923: Student newspaper, East Carolina Teacher’s College News, is issued. The Library Building and Student Life Building (Whichard and Ragsdale Buildings, respectively) are undergoing construction.
1924: Cotten Dormitory built. Library Building (Whichard) opens for faculty and students.
1926: Student Handbook giving rules and regulations for student behavior is distributed by the YWCA. Emerson Literary Society is formed.
1929: Graham Building under construction. First M.A. program approved.
1932: Intercollegiate baseball, football, and men’s basketball teams are formed. First Founder's Day celebration and homecoming for alumni. First man graduates from ECTC: Henry Oglesby.
1933: First MA conferred by ECTC to Deanie Boone Haskett.
1934: President Robert Wright dies; Leon Meadows becomes ECTC's new president. ECTC athletic teams renamed the PIRATES. SGA splits into two -- men and women.
1936: Davis Arboretum is landscaped. Association for Childhood Education formed.
1937: Chi Pi theatre group organized.
1938: Garage constructed (served as laundry, faculty offices and is now known as the English Annex). ECTC Band formed during the winter quarter.
1939: Robert Wright chapter of the Future Teachers of America formed. Freshmen form the Jarvis Forensic Club. YMCA chapter organized.
1940-1941: School Song, Hail to Thy Name So Fair, makes debut. Flanagan Building is constructed. BS degree approved. Alpha Iota Sorority -- Zeta Delta chapter -- formed. First homecoming parade.
1943: Men and women's SGA merges back into a unified Student Government Association.
1944: Howard J. McGinnis becomes ECTC's interim president.
1946: Dennis H. Cooke instated as new president. There were 64 faculty members, 1,222 students, 197 employees, operating budget of $754,239, 98 acre campus, property valued at $5 million and 3 degree programs.
Training school becomes part of the Pitt County School System.
1947: Enrollment of male students exceeds women for the first time. John D. Messick named the institution’s fourth president. Homecoming moves to November.
1948: BA designated as the liberal arts degree; BS designated a teaching degree. AFROTC -- Detachment 600 -- created.
1949: Haywood Dail house acquired by East Carolina to serve as the Chancellor's House. College Stadium built with a capacity of 2,000. East Carolina Teacher’s College celebrates 40th anniversary.
1950: Circle K Club organized. "Captain Teco" pirate mascot created for homecoming.
1951: ECTC receives College status and is renamed East Carolina College.
