Did You Know . . .Tuition to attend ECTTS in 1910 was free to students who agreed to teach for two years and $45.00 a year for all others. Fees for boarding were set at $90.00 a year with an additional fee of $35.00 a year for laundry, books, utilities, and medical care.
Cost of Construction for the new campus of ECTTS was as follows: Wilson Dormitory -- $26,469
Jarvis Dormitory -- $13,139
Old Austin (Administration Building) -- $32,538.
ECU's Purple and Gold were chosen by the first students of ECTTS in 1909. Asked to choose colors for the new school and establish one of our first traditions, the students voted for Old Gold and Royal Purple.Helen Keller visited East Carolina Teacher's Training School in 1916. She addressed the faculty and students of ECTTS on the subject of happiness. During her address, Ms. Keller made the following statements—"Happiness comes from within; love and happiness from achievement and gain.""We live for each other and by each other.""It is more difficult to teach the ignorant to think than the blind to see."
