Robert Herring Wright, an 1897 graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill with a long and illustrious career in education, became the first president of East Carolina Teacher’s Training School in 1909. During his term as president, ECTTS grew as an institution of higher learning and was extended from a two-year training school to a four-year teacher’s college. Wright held the position of President until his death in 1934 and saw ECTTS through its first twenty-five years as a successful and rapidly growing institution in eastern North Carolina. Dr. Wright was dedicated to producing exceptional teachers for the public schools of his native state. The growth of East Carolina Teacher’s Training School into what would be known 100 years later as a nationally recognized research university is a testament to the dedication and hard-work of its beloved first president.
