Timeline for East Carolina Teacher’s Training School -- 1909-1921

March 8, 1907: East Carolina Teacher’s Training School Chartered

May 14, 1907: $50,000 bond passed by Pitt County

June 5, 1907: City of Greenville offers proposal to State Board of Education for ECTTS

July 11, 1907: State Board of Education grants Greenville the location of the new ECTTS.

July 2, 1908: Groundbreaking Ceremonies are held.

1909: The campus was marked by Jarvis and Wilson dormitories, the Administrative Building (later to be know as the Austin Building), a Power Plant, Infirmary, and Refectory (dining hall).

Summer 1909: First faculty members were hired: Kate Lewis, William Ragsdale, Birdie McKenney, Sallie Davis, Maria Graham, Mamie Jenkins, Herbert Austin, Claude Wilson, Jennie Ogden, Fannie Bishop, Dr. Leon Meadows, Pres. Robert Wright.

October 5, 1909: First students enroll for classes in 2 year programs. 104 women, 19 men, and 11 faculty members.

November 12, 1909: Robert Wright inaugurated as the first president of ECTTS.

June 8, 1911: First class graduates. 16 graduates.

1911: Literary societies founded and named for authors Edgar Allen Poe and Sidney Lanier.

1912: Athletic League formed.

1920: Students request a self-government association.

1921: ECTTS renamed ECTC and begins offering 4 year programs. Enrollment numbers 1000 students.
