Carolyn Hammond Howell, Class of 1962

I attended ECU from 1958-1962. I lived in Jarvis dorm the entire time I was at ECU. It was centrally located. Being near the library and cafeteria was nice. At that time, however, Jarvis was not air conditioned. Dr. George Martin in the Geography Department was one of my favorite professors. His enthusiasm was catching. He was constantly using abbreviations in his lectures. They were fun to figure out.
Dr. Douglas Jones in the Education Department was another favorite professor. He made you feel like you were important. He amazed me by being able to remember all of his students names.
I enjoyed campus life. When you were not busy studying, there was dancing, ping-pong, cards, or just visiting in the Student Union. Bicycling around Greenville was always fun also.
Back then we had curfews. We had to be in our dorms by 10:30 p.m. on week nights and by 12:00 midnight on Saturdays. We also had to sign out before leaving the dorm and sign in when returning to the dorm.
If we were wearing shorts from our dorm on the way to a P.E. class, we had to wear a raincoat over the shorts. Known as East Carolina College at that time, the campus population was much smaller. We were the first graduating class to ever have a 1000 graduates. I really liked attending school at East Carolina.
My memory is about enrolling at ECC in 1958.
In those days freshmen came a week earlier than upperclassmen for orientation. I am coming on a scholarship for disabled veterans. A stipulation of the scholarship was that I must be housed on campus. All of the freshman dorms were full, so I was assigned to Jarvis Dorm. Unfortunately there were no upperclassmen on campus. That meant that Dean White, Ms. Smith, the dorm housemother, and I were the only occupants of Jarvis for several nights. I can assure you that was no fun, especially walking down the long hallways at night to the bathroom. It was my first time away from home alone and I REALLY was ALONE!!!
I finally went to Dean White and was given permission to stay in Cotten Hall with two of my high school classmates until the upperclassmen arrived on campus. The rest of my
orientation and enrollment at ECC went well. I went on to immensely enjoy my experiences at ECC.
