Christmas Celebration

Press release dated December 14, 1949 regarding Christmas party given by the faculty for the faculty. This and other articles are available in the University Archives.
Faculty members of East Carolina Teachers College were entertained yesterday evening at a formal dinner in the North Dining Hall on the campus. The entertainment was sponsored by the Social Committee of the faculty and brought together for an evening of pre-holiday festivities approximately 160 faculty members and guests from their families.

The North Dining Hall was attractively decorated for the occasion with a Christmas tree, a gift of Dr. Paul Jones of Farmville. The tables were centered with red candles, sugar-plum trees, evergreens, and glistening Christmas ornaments. During the evening Santa Claus, impersonated by James D. Cummings of the faculty, presided at the Christmas tree while gifts were distributed among guests.

The program for the evening included the reading of the Christmas Story by Dr. John D. Messick, college president, and the singing of Yuletide songs and carols by guests. An orchestra made up of Karl V. Gilbert, George Perry, Herbert Carter, R.R. Willmann, and Misses Lucy Nulton and Beatrice Chauncey provided music for the singers. Dr. Gilbert was in charge of the program and introduced the numbers. The dining room staff of the college was in charge of the dinner.

Following the program in the dining hall, faculty members organized themselves into a group of carolers and sang holiday songs to students in the dormitories on the campus.
