ECU Memories - 1980's
This memory was shared by Joanna Jones, Class of 1989. Share your memories with us too.
Our freshman orientation was in the summer of 1984. They were doing away with the old ECU pirate mascot to make way for Pee Dee the Pirate. That summer was the last summer you could buy memorabilia with the old pirate on it. The brass keyring that I bought that summer still holds my keys almost 22 years later!I used to ride my bike from White Hall to nursing classes, which
I understand the new Nursing Class will not be able to do! A small price for progress!
We spent our weekends at Mendenhall watching
movies or bowling, downtown at Chicos or Cubbies, or catching a toga party at one of the frat houses. Every freshman's first experience
with the wild side of the ECU night life included a night at the Elbo Room. We caught bands like REM and The Temptations at the Attic.
About 2 in the morning we stopped in at The Crows Nest for breakfast before crashing in the dorm.
We watched Pirate football in a much smaller stadium, and proudly supported them as they went to the Peach bowl.
Many of the older folks liked to tease that we were at "ECTC" as East Carolina started out as an all girls teachers college. Congtulations to "ECTC", East Carolina University on your centennial! I'm proud to be an ECU Pirate!
