I Thought I Would SuffocateI was a student at ECC in the late 50's, living in Jarvis Hall. The winter of 1958-59 we had a heavy snowfall.
The post office and dining hall were located behind Jarvis Hall. Everytime the girls would go to check for their mail or go to eat a meal, there would be a gang of boys waiting for us. They would grab us, roll us in the snow, throw snowballs at us and shake the snow from the nearby tree or shrubs on us. On one occasion, some of them got a little rough and pushed my face into the snow. With all my air passages filled with snow, I REALLY thought I was going to suffocate. Fortunately, something happened to cause them to let me up in time before that actually happened. From that time on though, I have been apprehensive about being thrown into the snow.
I have many FOND memories of my time at ECC (1958-62).

I remember the big ice storm in 1968. The trees were covered in ice. Branches were falling. The temperature was below freezing, and the women students were still not allowed to wear pants. Linda Rhyne, Class of 1974
I lived in Fletcher Dorm on the West Campus and we got a snow storm in the Spring of either 1984 or 1985. We got an unprecidented 5-6 inches. The Chancellor, [Dr. Howell] said he was not going to cancel classes, cause " this wasn't a kindergarten, it was a university!!". (I believe he said off campus students could be excused, but I just don't remember). So, from Fletcher dorm I put on snow boots, heavy coat etc, left the dorm one half hour earlier then I normally would and trekked through the snow to get to the Biology building. There were 6/22 (+/-) of the students there, the rest could or would not come. We sat and waited and waited and waited, to finally have someone come in and tell us that class would be cancelled, for the teacher(s) could not make it in. I laughed, went back to Fletcher and skipped all other classes that day!!! Knowing that all the teachers lived off campus, nobody thought about them trying to get into campus to teach!!The only other memory I have is the snow that we got in early April….like the 6th. Eastern Carolina rarely got snow, much less that late in the season, but we got it!!! Might even be the storm mentioned above!! It was another shocker on campus.

I was a freshman living Aycock when a big snowstorm was coming. A friend from up north said that North Carolina could not even get a foot of snow. He was bragging. My friend said that if we got a foot of snow he would run in the snow naked. The next day 13 inches came down and cancelled classes for one day. Needless to say the next day we made him go out in his boxers. In my 4 years at ECU this was the only cancellation for snow. I do not have any pictures, but I am sure there are some out there.

I remember one snowy day on campus and classes were cancelled. I lived in Tyler Hall then, and everyone was using whatever they could as a sled. You saw dining hall trays, plastic bags, laundry basket and even one of those plastic covered mattress you'd find in your room sliding down the hill in front of Jones hall. My friend got in trouble for using the mattress but we continued to enjoy the day.David Bautista, Class of 2006
