Student Literary Magazine Born

A student literary magazine for East Carolina College has been approved by the college Publications Board and will be published under the sponsorship of the Student Government Association. Two issues are planned for the present school year.

Heading the staff will be Bryan Harrison of Asheville and William Vance Arnold, Jr., of Greenville as co-editors. Ovid W. Pierce, distinguished North Carolina novelist and a member of the college Department of English, will act as faculty advisor. Oliver Williams of Rocky Mount has been appointed business manager.

The magazine will include stories, poems, essays, book reviews, and other examples of literary work done by students at the college. Entitled "The Rebel," it will be an illustrated slick paper publication.

Editors Arnold and Harrison are now organizing their staff and collecting material for the first issue, which according to plans will appear in February. They have announced the appointment as staff members of Dorothy Jackson of Greenville, Eugenia Trulove of Wilmington, and Edward L. Pilkington of Goldsboro.

All-American Honor is Awarded 'The Rebel'

East Carolina College, along with three other colleges in the United States, has received an All-American Honor Rating from the Associated Collegiate Press for its 1962 literary magazine "The Rebel," a student quarterly publication.

Editor Junius D. Grimes III of Washington, N.C., received the certificate of award, which reads, "'The Rebel' in recognition of its merit is awarded Al-American Honor Rating in the Forty-second National Magazine Critical Service of the Associated Collegiate Press at the University of Minnesota, School of Journalism . . ."

The Associated Collegiate Press is the largest college press and critical service in the world. Located at the University of Minnesota, the press handles a rating service for newspapers, yearbooks, and magazines published in colleges and universities throughout the country, including Canada.

"All magazine issues for the year are evaluated according to the critical service guidebook," stated Editor Grimes. "The Rebel," surpassing the five honor ratings in the score division, received a bonus score for the highest points.

The magazine, which has already received high praise in literary circles of the state, first appeared in 1958. Contents include interviews with noted writers, and fiction, poetry, essays, book reviews, and other materials by students and guest writers from the faculty. Artwork by talented students at the college as well as photographic studies are used as illustrations.
