THE LAST VISIT TODAY
Elizabeth City, Edenton, Washington and New Bern in Yesterday's Itinerary-Today the State Board Will Go to Kinston and Return to at Night.
(Special to the News and Observer.)New Bern, N.C., June 24 -- The State Board of Education now touring Eastern North Carolina inspecting sites offered by the cities of Rocky Mount, Tarboro, Kinston, Washington, Edenton, Elizabeth City, New Bern and Kinston for the location of the training school will complete the itinery [sic] at Kinston tomorrow in time to reach Raleigh at night.
Governor Glenn, Messrs. Lacy, Grimes, and Joyner arrived here at eight tonight, direct from Edenton over the new road from Washington. They were met at the station by Mr. D.A. Ward and a committee and were escorted in carriages to the Gem Hotel, where a fine spread presided over by Mr. James Bryan was given them for supper.
Early in the morning the sites offered by New Bern will be inspected, the board leaving for Kinston at nine fifteen.
Dr. Dixon, of the board, was taken ill at Washington Saturday, and could not go to Edenton and Elizabeth City.He was well enough to take a freight to New Bern this morning, drove over the offered sites and left for Morehead City before the passenger train arrived from Washington at eight.
The Board has had a strenuous day's work. Resting at Edenton for Sunday, they left on an early train for Elizabeth City, inspected the sites there and returned to Edenton, where they stopped long enough to look over there, then by train to Washington. They came direct to New Bern over the Norfolk and Southern's new track, in operation just a week.
At Elizabeth City the horses drawing the carriage containing Governor Glenn and Hon. J.B. Leigh, ran away, kicking out of the traces in their furious flight. The Govenor sprang out of the vehicle, running, and did not fall, escaping injury, and boarded the moving train, before it was definitely known the extent of Mr. Leigh's injury, who fell when he jumped.
The whole trip has been one series of dignified pleasure. At each town every courtesy has been shown, but not instance of improper effort to boom things or to bore the members of the board has been noted.
The decision may be reached as soon as the board reaches Raleigh Tuesday night, possibly Wednesday. There will be no delay.
Governor Glenn said tonight that it was inspiring to see the noble evidences of public spirit everywhere, and the absence of acrimonious rivalry in the earnest contest between the cities for the prize.
Of course, he said, only one could get it, but he believed from what he had seen that these grand people, would, when the decision was announced, realize that the board was actuated entirely for the good of all in whatever decision it rendered, and the people of all thetowns directly seeking the school would rally to the support of the institution with cordial heartiness.
Next to the educational spirit in all these towns, is the wonderful railroad development. The first train on the Raleigh and Pamilco road, direct from Greenville to Washington, passed over that line today, it being the private car of President Waters.
By Saturday the road will be opened to Farmville, fifteen miles from Greenville, and only twenty miles from Wilson.
The Atlantic Coast Line is pushing its new road form Washington to Vandimere, Pamlico county
