Distinguished Service Awards Presented

The Alumni Association presented its 1989 Distinguished Service Awards in April to Eddie Paschal "Pat" Draughon '60 of Dunn, Barbara B. Forester '59 of Charlotte and James A. "Jim" Hicks '71, '73 of Greensboro.

The awards are presented annually in recognition and appreciation of voluntary service to the university. The honorees received engraved pewter plates.

Pat Draughon is owner and president of EPD Enterprises, a contract services business which provides transportation, food services, refuse collection and housing maintenance primarily for government contracts.

In addition, he is a partner in DTH Construction Co. and holds interests in a farm equipment business, John Deere dealerships in Lumberton and Fayetteville, and a commercial fishing operation.

Draughon supports both academics and athletics at ECU as a member of the Chancellor's Society and the Pirate Club.Draughon and his wife Joyce '57 have each given $50,000 to support ECU athletics, designating them as endowment members.

Draughon served on the Pirate Club Executive Board during the 1987-88 term, and was a member of the search committee which chose Dr. Richard R. Eakin as chancellor.

Draughon was active in sports during his years at East Carolina, playing football for Coach Jack Boone and baseball for Coach Jim Mallory. He was a charter member of Kappa Alpha Order and finished in 1960 with a bachelor's degree in physical education and history.

The Clinton native taught school for five years in Enfield and Warsaw before starting an automobile dealership in Dunn in 1965.

Barbara Forester is president of Forester and Kinney Interiors Inc. and Lemon Tree Interiors Inc. of Charlotte and is a member of the American Society of Interior Designers.

Active on the board of directors for both the ECU Foundation and the Alumni Association, Forester assists ECU in her local community as secretary/treasurer of the Mecklenberg County Chapter of the Alumni Association.She provides financial support for ECU's academic programs as a member of the Chancellor's Society.

A native of Lenoir, Forester graduated in 1959 with a degree in elementary education.She has taught school in Florida and at American Dependent Schools in Turkey and England.

Jim Hicks is vice president and trust officer of NCNB National Bank in Greensboro. He is a member of the Chancellor's Society and has held all offices of the Alumni Association, serving a two-year term as president from 1986-88.

He is an active member of the Guilford County Chapter of the Alumni Association, and co-chaired the annual giving campaign in that area in 1987-88.

Hicks earned a bachelor's degree in sociology in 1971 and a master's degree in counseling in 1973. He is a native of Winston-Salem.
