The SGA officially named the campus streets last night and approved the idea of acquiring a mascot for the school.

The street committee offered the legislators a choice of three names on each street and the body voted in the official names. The action came after the committee met for the second time to choose names the streets. Chairman Thomas Ruffin explained that hardly any name would be agreeable to everybody and the best way was to let the legislature pick out one of several alternatives.

The names are: Buccaneer Avenue [Founders Drive], Carolinian Street [Trustees Way and Chancellor's Way], Collegiate Street [no longer exists], Ivy Street [Alumni Lane], Varsity Street [no longer exists], Union Drive [Beckwith Drive], Stadium Hill Drive [College Hill Drive], and Slay Drive [Duncan Court].

The only names that were changed from the original committee's suggestion was Carolinian Street rather than Co-ed Lane, North State Avenue [parking lots north of Bloxton House] rather than Bermuda Street and Collegiate Street over Pine Street.

President Hudson said the students will have an opportunity to approve or disapprove the names at election on Tuesday, July 22. President Hudson stated that if the students approve the names, street signs will be erected within a week.

After delegate at large Don Griffin moved that the SGA approve the idea of getting a school mascot, a lively discussion ensued over the choice of animal. Mascot Committee Chairman Clint LeGette reported that a chimpanzee was investigated and found to be unsuitable for a mascot.

After discussing the possibility of a chimpanzee with an expert, LeGette said that a chimpanzee would be a problem rather than a suitable pet.

LeGette also contacted a bird farm in Florida and found that a talking parrot or some bird in the parrot group would be available.

Several suggestions came from the floor. A St. Bernard, a great dane, donkey, a burro, and a ocelot (wild cat) were recommended. The committee is to examine these possibilities in the near future.

LeGette said that he thought that the SGA could offer three different animals as suggestions and let the students choose one by general election.

LeGette will report back his findings at the next SGA meeting.
