Enrollment at East Carolin Teachers College stood at 1144 students when classes began this week, according to Dr. Howard J. McGinnis, registrar. New students will continue to registrar for the fall quarter until October 10. It is expected that the total number of students for the quarter will be close to 1200 men and women at this time.
The freshman class of 477 students differs in personnel from any other to enter the college, for men outnumber women three to one. There are 369 men and 108 women.Dr. McGinnis explains that there are two causes for the unusual condition.Veterans entering the college have increased considerably the number of men ordinarily enrolled.The addition of a twelfth grade in North Carolina public schools and the resulting fact that there were few high school graduates last spring has markedly decreased the number of women to enter the college.
Indicative of changes at the college are statistics issued from the registrar's office which compare conditions in 1939 with those today. There has been a 105% increase in the number of men students.This fall there is a 35% decrease in the number of women as compared with the number in 1939. Women students in 1939 numbered 1035 as compared with 651 in September, 1946. The number of freshman men this fall shows an increase of 536% over the number in 1939; and the number of freshman women, a 64% decrease. The teaching staff shows an 11% increase.
