Around Town

Alumni share memories of downtown Greenville. If you have memories of ECU, ECC, ECTC or ECTTS please share them with us.
James Mitchell III, Class of 1969
Your story of downtown brought many memories. I worked at a bar/restaurant called the "Coach and Four" for a while, also at the original Hardee's. Then got a job carrying newspapers on a motor route, which took 3 hours each afternoon (except saturday) and the hated daylight sunday morning delivery! I made as much doing that as my wife made at Pitt Memorial as the 1st medicare secretary ('66-'68). My wife Mary Lee was a Spanish major for 2 years at ECU finishing her degree at Radford U. We celebrated our 40th anniversy last summer at our vacation home on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Oh yes I just remembered my 1st job in Greenville. It was a little tire shop/bar-b-que joint called Darwin Waters. That was worth several credit hours in my education that I unfortunatly never given credits for as was moving into Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity my 1st quarter on campus because admissions exceded dorm space, and SPE had just aquired an adjoining house which they graciously rented to incoming freshmen.

Mary Jurgens, Class of 1987
My memory of downtown was getting in line for Pantana Bob's, no matter what the weather. Everyone you wanted to see would be there. Also, see Huey Lewis at the Attic, and The Connells at New Delhi. I can remember cashing checks at the Corner Store so that I could drink %5.00 could just about get me through the weekend. I remember homecomings wearing the large mums your fraternity date would buy for you.

Tom Powers, Class of 1970 & 75
1966 -- Freshman year . . . the COACH & FOUR WOULD ROCK ON THE WEEKEND; HAPPY'S POOL HALL WAS A GREAT PLACE TO GET A $1.50 BARBEQUE PLATE (that would never pass the Health Dept standards today). I lived at the Sig Ep House . . . 505 E. 5th Street . . . and that food would never pass health dept standards either! . . . Still? Turn 60 in October . . . I AM BETTER FOR ALL THOSE GREAT ECU UNDERGRAD AND GRAD DAYS!!

Julianne Freakley, Class of 1992
My memory is hanging out downtown on the weekends. We'd start at the 'Elbo' and then move to 'PBs' (Pantana Bobs). Afterwards, we'd hit Omar's for food, and head to a late night.

Richard Palsha, Class of 1980
Some of my favorite memories of ECU were of playing frisbee behind Scott Dorm and also my favorite places to hang out on a regular basis were the Elbow Room, the Library (the bar downtown of course) and the Attic. I also used to love shopping at the Mushroom Shop Downtown on the walking mall. I still tell friends today that the social aspects of ECU coupled with the classroom really prepared me for the role I play today in life, as the GM of Training for Service Net in Jeffersonville, IN. Thanks for the memories and once a Pirate, always a Pirate!
