Committee Calls for Help in Honoring President Leo Jenkins

This article describes a student tribute to Leo W. Jenkins. This and other articles may be found in the records of the Chancellor's Office, Record Group CH1050 , Series 1, Scrapbook File, 1914-1978 in the University Archives.

Citation for this article is: Jones, Bev. "Committee Calls for Help in Honoring Pres. Jenkins," East Carolinian, November 19, 1968.

"Why bring a brick-size rock back from Thanksgiving holidays?" many students are asking.

A fountain and patio built from students' rocks and bricks from Old Austin will be constructed on the triangle in front of Belk Dormitory to honor Leo W. Jenkins.

Construction of the $5000 project will begin as soon as adequate funds are available. SGA President David Lloyd said he is expecting contributions from University students friends of the Jenkins family, political figures, the Board of Trustees, and alumni "We hope to start construction shortly after Christmas and complete the project during this academic year."

"We feel it feeling that in some small way we should try to repay Dr. Jenkins for all the many hours of service he has given," explained Chipper Linville, Chairman of the Gradification Project, "He done something for us so we are undertaking this project to let each student repay him in some small way -- by their contribution of a rock."

Dr. Jenkins has done something for each student that has been, is, and ever will be enrolled here." Commented Lloyd. "I am speaking of his tremendous effort to attain university status for E C. Not only will the diploma mean more, but the overall prestige of attaining a university will enhance the students' chances of good jobs."

The Gradification Project [sic] committee, ten members including representatives of SGA, MRS, WRC, and Panhellenic Council, is awaiting architectural drawings.

Besides honoring Dr. Jenkins, the committee hopes the project will unify the student body and beatify the campus.

The Belk triangle site was chosen because "the Hill is the part of campus that has exclusively been completed since Dr. Jenkins has been at EC," said Linville. It is 'his' part of the campus."

Students returning from Thanksgiving vacation may leave their rocks in rock bins which will be built on the site of Old Austin and the Belk triangle.

"The posters throughout campus that ask 'Do you care enough?' express the sentiments of those helping plan the project," said a committee member.

We feel that ourGradification Project [sic] will be an overwhelming success because the students "do" care. Each student is being given the chance to make a personal contribution to an idea and a structure that will stand for years to come and will represent a very meaningful part of our lives and the life of a man who has dedicated his life to our University."
