Women's Basketball
The East Carolina women's basketball team was first organized as part of the Athletic League formed in 1912. The team continued to grow and was fully competitive by the time the school became ECTC. In fact, the team's undefeated first season as an intercollegiate team in 1934 prompted President Wright, for the first time ever, to rescind the long-standing mandate that female students wear hats and gloves off campus and dedicated his full support to women's basketball at ECTC. His announcement was met with a standing ovation.

Men's Basketball
ECTC formed a men's basketball team called "The Teachers" in 1932. The first athletic team for male students on campus, the team won their first game of the season to Campbell College.

Men's Basketball
1947 marked the first year in East Carolina history that male enrollment surpassed female enrollment. This is evidenced by the large growth in membership of the team. The 1947 basketball team is significantly larger than the original 1932 team.

Football Team
The first men's intercollegiate football team was formed in the fall of 1932. The team lost all their games that first season. The next academic year all sports teams were renamed "the Pirates."

East Carolina Teachers College Concert Band, 1939
The ECTC Band was formed in the winter of 1938 by Dean Tabor. The initial twenty member band quickly grew to sixty by the end of the first year. The tremendous growth in membership was acknowledged by the purchase of new purple and gold uniforms. The student body showed its enthusiasm and support of the new addition to ECTC by raising over $1,000.00 to go towards the cost of outfitting their new band.

The ECTC intercollegiate baseball team was organized in the spring of 1932. They won two of their games in the inaugural season.
