Mike Crumpton

Mike Crumpton is the Assistant Dean for Administrative Services at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  His primary duties include overseeing the budget, facilities and human resources.  A formal retail manager, Mike has also served as the Library Director at Wake Technical Community College and as Access Services Manager for the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County.  He has a BA in Business from the University of Central Florida and an MLS from the University of Kentucky, as well as certification as a Senior Professional in Human Resources thru SHRM.  He currently serves on the advisory committee for Central Carolina Community College’s paraprofessional library program.

Sarah Dorsey

Sarah Dorsey has been the Head of the Music Library at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro for 15 years.  She holds a BM in Organ from Stetson University, a Masters in Music from Boston University and an MLS from The University of Arizona. Her campus involvement with sustainability began when the UNCG Committee on Sustainability was started in Fall of 2006.  With Deetra Thompson, a colleague in the library, she started a sustainability film and discussion series that is in its third year.  This series brings together the campus community with the Triad community to learn about and discuss issues of concern to us all.  She plays cello in the student orchestra and the Old Time Ensemble at UNCG.

Beth Filar-Williams is Coordinator of Library Services for Distance Education at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She was formerly a library consultant supporting all types of libraries in Colorado, a Map & GIS Librarian, and a middle school librarian. Beth holds a BA in Geography from Johns Hopkins University and an MLS from the University of Maryland. She recently presented on the topic Going Green @ your library for two library consortiums in the Chicago area and will be presenting for one in Massachusetts this June. As you can imagine, she is very passionate about sustainability, environmentally friendly practices, and how anyone can take small, easy steps to create a “greener” world. Catherine L. Adams joined the Office of Institutional Diversity at East Carolina University as a Program Specialist in April 2007. She plans programs for faculty, staff, and students that foster and reinforce ECU’s vision to “recognize that diversity and respect for human difference within the academy is a key source of intellectual vitality and innovative spirit.” She also serves as a member of the Chancellor’s Diversity Council, the Chancellor’s Community Advisory Council, and the Centennial Diversity Committee.

Christine Andresen is currently the Microforms Coordinator and Federal Documents department student supervisor at East Carolina University.  She received a BA in Anthropology from ECU, and is currently working on her MLS at NCCU.  After graduation, Christine would like to become an academic reference librarian.

Alan Bailey

Alan Bailey is a 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Facilitator, Total Quality Transformation Trainer (TQT), conflict resolution facilitator, and consultant who has facilitated process improvement teams for colleges, universities, businesses, and community organizations throughout the state.  This lecturer, researcher, storyteller, and aspiring author received his undergraduate degree from East Carolina University and advanced degrees from East Carolina University and North Carolina Central University.  Over his 24-year career as a professional librarian, Alan has served as a public school media coordinator, branch manager of a public library and worked in community college and university libraries.
 
Alan currently serves as Assistant Professor & Education Curriculum Librarian at Joyner Library, East Carolina University, is active in numerous local, state, and national organizations, including the Coretta Scott King Book Awards Committee, and has appeared in theater productions and a major motion picture.

Gloria Bradshaw

Gloria Bradshaw has worked as the Conservation Lab Manager of the Preservation and Conservation unit in Joyner Library at East Carolina University since 1993.  She co-chairs on the Joyner Library Disaster Committee and is a member of the Preservation Task Force.  Gloria oversees all conservation treatments in the unit and is responsible for ensuring all Environmental Health and Safety regulations are followed.  Her training and research include art courses at ECU such as drawing and design, Solinet workshops in Preservation and Disaster planning, Book and Paper repair, Deacidification treatments, Mold Recovery and Library binding for preservation.  In pursuit of her training and research, Gloria has traveled from North Carolina to Maryland attending workshops at such institutions as ECU, State, Chapel Hill, Wake Forest, Etherington Conservation Center and Johns Hopkins.  She received the ECU Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Innovation in 1996.

Eleanor I. Cook is the Assistant Director for Collections & Technical Services, Joyner Library, East Carolina University, where she has been since August 2008.  From 1990-2008 she was a Serials Librarian at Appalachian State University.  She also has held positions at North Carolina State University, Georgia Institute of Technology, and the University North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Eleanor has over 25 years experience working in all aspects of technical services and “loves all of it,” not just serials!  She was President of NASIG in 2002/2003 and has been active in ALCTS, NCLA, the North Carolina Preservation Consortium, and the Charleston Conference.  She is the chief moderator of the listserv ACQNET-L.

Mark Custer

Mark Custer was fortunate to fall in love with the library profession as a whole, and to simultaneously discover a particular niche within it, while working at the University Archives of Syracuse University.  There, his love for utilizing the internet to help bridge the gap between patrons and special collections was born.  Since that time, he has worked as a Technical Services Librarian in the Granville County Public Library at Oxford, N.C., and also at the Digital Collections department of East Carolina University.  You can find him online at http://www.halfalibrarian.com.

Maliha Farhadi

Originally from Kabul, Afghanistan, Maliha Farhadi came as a Fulbright graduate student to NC State University. After obtaining her MA in ESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) she taught English at different levels, primary school to university, for fifteen years. She eventually moved to Greenville and started working in Joyner Library, first in the Circulation Department and then Teaching Resources Department, while earning her Masters in Library Science. She is married to Dr. Abdul-Shakoor Farhadi and has two children.

Teaching foreign students and working with the public has given her a broad perspective and understanding of diversity of all types including race, age, religion, and cultural background.

Jacquelyn Erdman

Jacquelyn Erdman is the Web Services Librarian at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. Erdman graduated with a BA in Multimedia from Bradley University, Peoria, Illinois, and an MS in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Her interest is in the evaluation and application of online communication tools and the problems that occur with new technologies.  She has written a book titled “Library Web Ecology: what you need to know as web design coordinator” which will be published in May and is chronicling her use of the book while redesigning the Joyner Library’s website through her blog: “Technolust and Loathing”, http://technolustandloathing.wordpress.com.

 

William Gee

William Gee serves as Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Librarian at Joyner Library, East Carolina University. He holds a Master of Science in Information Science from the University of Tennessee and a Bachelor of Arts in history and political science and a paralegal certificate from Berry College. Mr. Gee has worked previously in reference, circulation, serials, government documents, and technical services. Outside of libraries, he has worked in municipal government human resources and with children’s educational programming. He recently was inducted into ECU’s Servire Society in recognition of his community service.

Debbie Hathaway

Debbie Hathaway is the General Business Counselor with the Small Business and Technology Development Center at ECU.  She works with startup and existing companies in preparing business plans, financial projections, marketing plans and loan packages.  After completing her business degree from East Carolina, Debbie worked with ECU’s Center for Applied Technology until 1988.  From 1988 until 2003, Debbie owned and consulted with several small businesses in eastern North Carolina.  She has been with SBTDC since 2003.

David Hisle is Joyner Library's current Fellow.  As a Fellow, he has worked in the Reference, Special Collections, Digital Collections, and Collection Development departments.  Prior to that, he worked for several years as evening supervisor for the circulation department.  In addition to a MLS from NCCU, he holds a MFA in Creative Writing from UNCW.

David Hursh is Associate Professor and Head Music Librarian at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC.  He received the Master of Science in Library Science from Florida State University in Tallahassee, and has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from Houghton College in Houghton, NY and Converse College in Spartanburg, SC, respectively.  Mr. Hursh has received a number of research grants and honors including the Music Library Association’s Walter Gerboth and Dena Epstein awards, the North Caroliniana Society’s Archie K. Davis Fellowship, and the North Carolina Society of Historians’ Paul Jehu Barringer Award.  In addition, Mr. Hursh is a member of the Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society and the Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity.

Cynthia Jones, PhD

Cynthia earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology (North Carolina Wesleyan College), a Masters of Business Administration (Campbell University) and a doctorate in Higher Education Administration and Supervision (North Carolina State University). She has experience in training development and delivery, facilitation, organizational development, team building, and project management. She used several personality inventories in her various positions with Sprint as a part of her team building efforts and career counseling with employees.

Barbara Memory, PhD

Barbara Cobb Memory earned the Ph.D. and Bachelor’s Degrees in Music Education and Music Therapy at Michigan State University, and the M.M. in Music Therapy at Florida State University. She is a Board Certified Music Therapist, and obtained Orff-Schulwerk Certification for Levels I and II and Suzuki Training.
Dr. Memory has been the Director of Music Therapy at ECU since 1986, where she coordinates the undergraduate and graduate Music Therapy Program.  Dr. Memory is a member of the American Music Therapy Association, the Music Therapy Association of North Carolina, the Suzuki Association of the Americas, and Rotary International.
She has presented numerous workshops for music therapists, music educators, allied professional organizations, and community groups, and directs three community choirs for individuals with special needs.  She has recently done demonstration Music Therapy projects in settings for oncology, adolescent substance abuse, Alzheimer’s Disease, at-risk youth, and Assisted Living.

Suzanne Metcalf

A native of Pawtucket, RI, Suzanne has been steeped in art, music and cooking all her life. Her early Crayon imitations of Hollywood costume designer Edith Head’s work eventually led to an encouraging letter from Cher’s and Carol Burnett’s costume designer, Bob Mackey. She attended North Carolina School of the Arts for costume design where she met her husband Tim Metcalf, a Hollywood stuntman and ECU’s Athletic Compliance Director. After running a home catering business, she opted for a desk job in the Henderson Library at Georgia Southern University. During the library’s 2004 Earth Day festivities, she fashioned book jackets into gift bags for a recycling display booth. In 2006 she returned to North Carolina when her husband accepted the ECU position and less than a year she joined the Joyner Library Interlibrary Loan Department as Document Delivery Coordinator. She continues creating the gift bags from Joyner’s discarded book jackets and donates most of the bags to charitable silent auctions.

Laura Mixon, PhD

For most of the time between 1997 and the present, Laura has taught as ad junct faculty in the School of Communication at East Carolina University. She moved with her family to Caracas, Venezuela, where they lived between 2004 and August, 2007. While teaching, either at ECU, or at a private academy in Caracas, Laura pursued her doctorate in Communication from Regent University and just defended her dissertation in March, 2009.
Before teaching at ECU, Laura worked as a writer and economic consultant in Caracas. She was also the founding editor of the bi-lingual monthly publication, Management Perspective, which served the multinational corporate market in Venezuela. She speaks Spanish fluently, and used to speak French and German well.
Her B.A. is in Spanish and Economics from Sweet Briar College and she earned an MBA from the University of Dallas. She is mother of three children and grandmother to a toy poodle.

Matt Reynolds is the Public Services Librarian for the Verona Joyner Langford North Carolina Collection at Joyner Library. He has been in this position since 2005. He has also served as the Colonial Dames Fellow in the Special Collections Manuscripts Division at the University of Kentucky, where he worked with the personal papers of author Wendell Berry and those of the Frontier Nursing Service.  He received his MSLS from the University of Kentucky in 2005.  His current research interests include strategies for engaging undergraduates with special collection’s materials, the manner in which North Carolina libraries are collecting North Carolina focused publications, Appalachian history, and the history of the Vietnam War.

Beth Winstead is currently the Innovation and Technology Officer at Joyner Library.  This title means that playing with new technology is a job requirement.  She has more than 26 years experience working in libraries in the areas of Public Services, Technical Services and Systems.  Beth holds a BSBA from ECU, an MLS from NCCU and an MPA from ECU.  She is the proud mother of a professional mascot and a pickle princess as well as the wife of a full time nontraditional college student – there is never a dull moment at her house!
